Storing Beer The Proper Way
As you know, beer is perishable, so how you store it is very important. The
perfect storage environment should have the following characteristics:
Cool
–
depending on its style, beer should be stored cold (36-38° F) or at room temp
(below 70° F) to best preserve its taste and aroma.
Cool temperatures (45-54° F) are appropriate for slow maturation of some bottle
conditioned, unfiltered, and certain malty high-alcohol beers—such as barley
wines—that change in interesting ways as they age.
Clean
–
store beer in a dirt and dust free place, away from things like garlic, onions,
and peppers, since beer in bottles and cans can absorb strong odors.
Dry
–
keep beer away from places with mold, mildew, and rust. You can tell your
storage space is damp if cartons fall apart or the labels begin to peel.
Dark
–
light breaks down flavor of beer and affects its taste, while direct sunlight
may bring the beer’s temperature beyond the ideal storing range.
