The SIDEWALK MOVING PICTURE FESTIVAL was created to
bring new films to a new audience. Since its debut in 1999,
filmmakers from across the country and around the world have come to
Birmingham to screen their work at Sidewalk and been thrilled to
discover fresh, enthusiastic crowds eager to devour new independent
cinema. In 2002, Sidewalk attracted more than 10,000 attendees
during the festival weekend, some flying in from as far away as
Denmark and the United Kingdom to attend the festivities. The 2005
festival hit a record 13,000 attendees. Since its debut,
Sidewalk has been embraced whole-heartedly by the community, and has
grown to one of the Top Ten Film Festival Getaways in the country,
presenting 200 films to 12,000 attendees during its fifth year.
Today, Sidewalk is not just a weekend festival, but encompasses a
broad range of year-round programs to inspire, support and encourage
films and filmmaking in Alabama, including the
Sidewalk Cinematheque,
the Sidewalk Salon,
the Alabama
Student Filmmaking Competition, and the
Sidewalk Scramble.
The
Sidewalk Cinematheque is a monthly screening series held at the
WorkPlay Theatre in Birmingham's Southside, made possible in part by
grants from the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham, the Hugh
Kaul Foundation, the Alabama State Council on the Arts and and the
National Endowment for the Arts.
Mudbugs & Music benefiting
Juvenile Arthritis. Sounds like a perfect match.

Saturday afternoons spent eating red-hot crawfish
with cold beer are hard to beat. Throw in the Taylor Grocery Band, a
blues-gospel-bluegrass band
from Oxford, Miss., give the proceeds to
charity and it's a perfect storm of weekend leisure. It's the
second annual Mudbugs & Music Crawfish Boil benefiting juvenile
arthritis. Fifteen bucks gets you in to see Jimbo Mathis, Taylor
Grocery Band and the Electric Mudd at the Open Door Cafe in
Crestline on Saturday. You also get all-you-can-eat bugs. Kids under
12 free.
